I grew up listening to Black Jack Wayne, Cottonseed Clark and others in Richmond California. I lived not far from the late lamented Trio Lounge. Richmond used to get all kinds of performers, Buck Owens wrote a song called Sam's Place about a joint on MacDonald. I first saw Merle Haggard on Black Jack's show on KTVU in the 60's, and came to appreciate Tommy Duncan through his show. People like Spade Cooley used to play locally. We used to go to the Dream Bowl in Napa all the time to see good honky tonk artists. Thank you for keeping them alive!
Sincerely,
Gregory Drake
Gregory, glad to hear from a fan of real country music. I don't spend as much time as I'd like on this blog, what with work, etc. getting in the way, lol. And thanks for posting the comment, Walt in San Pablo.
Is the blog still active? I'd love to find a source of information about Black Jack's KTVU-TV show, what year it began, specifically. I performed on it once, doing an Elvis song, and I remember being about eight years old, which would have been 1956. But I could have been as old as 10.
Thanks,
Richard Beban
